Residents of Little Wetherford were left both confused and amused on Monday morning after discovering 47 cucumbers carefully arranged in a spiral pattern around the town’s central fountain.

The unusual display appeared overnight in Market Square and quickly became the talk of the town, drawing early-morning crowds who gathered to photograph the bizarre arrangement before council workers eventually removed it.

Strange Activity Caught on CCTV

According to local police, security footage from a nearby supermarket shows the suspect entering the store at approximately 3:17 a.m. wearing what officers described as a Victorian-style lighthouse keeper outfit, complete with a long dark coat, brass buttons and what appeared to be a large artificial beard.

Instead of targeting valuables or cash, the suspect reportedly went straight to the produce section and began placing cucumbers into a trolley.

“He ignored everything else in the shop,” said Sergeant Mark Ellison of Wetherford Police.

“He appeared very focused on counting the cucumbers and double-checking the number before leaving.”

The suspect exited the shop a few minutes later, but employees later discovered exact change for the cucumbers left on the floor near the self-checkout area, suggesting the suspect had technically paid for the items despite not using the tills.

Spiral Discovered at Sunrise

At around sunrise, several early-morning walkers noticed the unusual arrangement surrounding the town fountain.

The cucumbers had been laid out in a precise spiral formation across the paving stones, beginning near the fountain’s base and gradually expanding outward.

In the centre of the spiral sat a small rubber duck wearing what witnesses described as a tiny top hat.

Local resident Helen Whitaker, who first spotted the display while walking her dog, said she initially thought it was an official installation.

“I assumed it was some kind of art project,” she said. “But when I realised they were actual cucumbers, I just stood there trying to figure out how anyone had the time or patience to do that.”

Witnesses Report Unusual Statement

Several witnesses reported seeing a man matching the CCTV description standing near the fountain shortly after dawn, apparently observing the arrangement.

One passer-by claimed the man suddenly shouted:

“THE SEA WILL UNDERSTAND.”

Shortly afterwards, he reportedly left the square riding a bright pink children’s bicycle, which witnesses said had traffic cones in a basket on the front.

Police Continue Investigating

Police confirmed that no property damage occurred during the incident and no other suspicious activity has been reported in connection with it.

However, officers say they are continuing to review CCTV footage from nearby streets in an attempt to identify the individual.

“It’s certainly one of the more unusual reports we’ve received,” Sgt Ellison said. “At the moment we’re keeping an open mind about what the motivation might have been.”

Council staff removed the cucumbers later in the morning, bringing an end to the strange display.

Despite this, residents have already begun referring to the incident online as “The Cucumber Spiral Mystery.” Authorities are asking anyone who may have information about the event to contact Wetherford Police.
