The 2026 Formula One season began in dramatic fashion as George Russell secured victory at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit, leading a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

Russell’s victory marked a strong start to the championship campaign for Mercedes, with teammate Kimi Antonelli finishing second. Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Scuderia Ferrari after a race that featured intense strategy battles and several incidents.

Early Battle for the Lead

The race began with Leclerc briefly taking the lead from Russell during the opening stages, setting up an early duel between Ferrari and Mercedes. However, Mercedes gained the advantage through a well-timed pit stop during a Virtual Safety Car period, allowing Russell to regain control of the race.

Antonelli also impressed during the race, recovering from a lower starting position to secure second place and complete a strong result for the team.

Dramatic Moments Throughout the Race

The race featured several dramatic incidents and notable performances across the grid.

  • Oscar Piastri crashed during the warm-up lap, meaning the home favourite was unable to start his home race.

  • Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari.

  • Lando Norris recovered to finish fifth after starting further down the order.

  • Max Verstappen produced one of the standout drives of the race, climbing from 20th on the grid to sixth place.

Further down the field, strong performances came from Oliver Bearman in seventh and rookie Arvid Lindblad who scored points on his Formula One debut.

A New Season Begins

The Australian Grand Prix marked the opening round of the 2026 Formula One World Championship, beginning a season featuring new regulations and several driver moves across the grid. Formula One entered the season with reigning world champion Norris and defending constructors’ champions McLaren aiming to retain their titles.

With Mercedes showing strong early pace and Russell taking the first win of the year, the result sets up an intriguing battle for the championship as the season continues with the next rounds of the calendar.
